Intro to Data Analytics

Regardless of your industry or role, fluency in the language of data analytics will allow you to contribute to data driven decision making. This online workshop will put you in the driver’s seat to understand, analyze, and interpret data so you too can join the data conversation.

About this Workshop

In this online introductory workshop, you’ll learn to ask the right questions of your data, while learning basic analytic functionality. Your newfound data analytic skills will be applied to real-world datasets, allowing you to develop recommendations based on your findings.

Preparation

This is a class for beginners; no prior knowledge is required.

Excel & Analytics

The Excel & Analytics workshop is designed for students who are relatively familiar with other office productivity software, for example, Microsoft Word.

About this Workshop

This workshop introduces a range of Excel topics giving students a taste of the potential that can be achieved with Excel and touches briefly on everything from navigation and layout to using functions and charts.

This workshop was not designed to go over any topic in extreme detail, but more as a “sampler” of topics. The expectation is for students to be able to leave and be familiar with several of the Excel skills necessary for most positions that require some “basic to intermediate” Excel knowledge.

This course is excellent prep for the SQL Analytics Course.

Agenda

Preparation

Students should have a general familiarity with Excel including knowing how to navigate a spreadsheet and how to copy & paste. Please bring a laptop with Microsoft 2016 or 2019 installed (PC or Mac) but please note there may be minor differences between Microsoft’s implementation on the two platforms. It is also highly recommended that you have a mouse. A second monitor or tablet is not required but highly recommended.

Students will be emailed case study files prior to class that they should download to their desktop. This is an interactive class, and your participation and questions are encouraged.

This class will occur completely online so students should also have a laptop or computer with at least 4GB RAM and a working microphone and camera. Class pre-work will be distributed via email which will include detailed instructions for downloading Zoom and Slack (where the class will be hosted). An internet connection of at least 10 Mpbs download speed is also highly recommeded.

Intro to Python

In this workshop, you’ll learn Python, a popular and widely used programming language. Python is a great beginner language that is quick to learn and extremely versatile.

About this Workshop

This workshop will take absolute beginners through the basics of Python to an ability to write code with confidence — and start programming immediately.

Takeaways

Preparation

You must have basic technical aptitude and orientation to computers, and curiosity to learn new tools. Willingness to learn about a text-based/principle driven analytic tool with little real GUI support, and determination to push through the natural frustration of confronting new concepts. This workshop is taken completely online. We will provide login information and a link to the platform on the day of the session. You will need a computer and a strong internet connection.

Intro to SQL

Imagine that you have a spreadsheet containing every data point about your customers — their preferences, their web browsing behavior, the products they’ve bought. What would you do with all that information? When you know SQL, you can slice and dice that data any way you want, providing critical insights that drive business strategy.

About this Workshop

SQL provides powerful but reasonably simple tools for data analysis and handling. This workshop will take absolute beginners through the basics of SQL to an ability to write queries with confidence — and start using the tool immediately.

Tableau & Analytics

Data analytics is in the midst of an evolution. In today’s digital world, the practice of decision makers relying on information to be delivered to them is no longer sufficient to keep pace. Tableau is software that puts access to data, and the insights it can unlock, directly in the hands of those who need it.

About this Workshop

The software is designed to help people see and understand data and offers a powerful yet intuitive and easy to use method of visually exploring & analyzing data for more effective decision making and strategizing.

This workshop provides an introduction to visual data discovery using Tableau software. It will explore how to use Tableau to connect to, interpret, and analyze data. You will explore sample data sets and then create a Tableau Dashboard showcasing the insights they have discovered.

Intro to Amazon Web Services (Cloud)

Amazon Web Service is a cloud service provider that is the on-demand delivery of IT resources over the Internet with pay-as-you-go pricing.

About this Workshop

Cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of IT resources over the Internet with pay-as-you-go pricing. Instead of buying, owning, and maintaining physical data centers and servers, you can access technology services, such as computing power, storage, and databases, on an as-needed basis from a cloud provider like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud (GCP).

This workshop provides an introduction to the Cloud Platform using services. We will explore how to use AWS and setup services and ultimately gain the AWS Certification.

Takeaways

Preparation

To prepare for this class you it would be great to have an awareness of  Cloud concepts. Please setup AWS account prior to class.
